Alibris is an online marketplace for books; which was first established by Richard Weatherford; a student and college professor turned bookseller, with a strong passion for old books and modern technology. In 1982, he created a company called Interloc, meaning "go-between", as an interlocutor to help locate hard to find books for sellers.
The company was initially a database for professional booksellers only, and was not open to the public. In 1997, Marty Manley asked an author friend how to find a copy of her book, which was out-of-print, the author suggested Interloc. When Marty found the book, he was very impressed by the efficiency of the company. After Marty was introduced to Dick, they soon discussed how Interloc could become a larger company by merging online shopping with independent booksellers.
The twosome travelled for weeks throughout the US, meeting with booksellers and learning about the online book business. At the end of their travels, they decided to create a new company out of Interloc, and in 1998, Alibris was created to serve professional booksellers but also to all customers.
